4 Best Ryan Gosling Movies That Desperately Need Sequels – Drive and More

  • Several great Ryan Gosling movies arguably deserve a repeat visit.
  • Drive is one Ryan Gosling film most everyone would love a sequel for.
  • A more lighthearted Ryan Gosling movie sequel could be The Nice Guys 2.

I don’t know about you, but I have yet to run into a Ryan Gosling movie I didn’t love. The guy has been cranking out winners ever since he burst onto the scene in 1995.

His star rose rapidly from there, as he’s played a young Hercules, a cocaine addicted teacher, a lawyer, and an assassin – just to name a few roles.

Of course, we all have our favorites. As is the case with any favorite, it’s tough to say goodbye forever. That has me thinking about the best Ryan Gosling movies – and in particular which flicks he’s done that deserve a callback.

One could argue that numerous Ryan Gosling films deserve a second look (or an extension of sorts), but I’ve got four that absolutely need to be revisited.

Let’s dive in.

Drive

It’s been a decade since Gosling put on the gloves, but we need Drive 2 to actually happen. There have been whispers about a Drive sequel, but so far, nothing has materialized.

And in all fairness, this sounds as dead as it gets. But I can dream.

Gosling was as cool and collected as ever in this one, where he plays a stunt man by day, and a vengeful hero by night. Well, sort of.

It’s not like Gosling was Batman over here, but he did stomp the shit out a guy’s face in an elevator.

This film – and Ryan Gosling’s performance – left a lasting mark.

That could be enough to keep Gosling and co. from returning (some things are better left alone, after all), but you can’t convince me there isn’t more story to tell.

The ending doesn’t necessarily guarantee we get to see him back as “driver”, but one can hope. There’s no doubt Drive ranks as one of the best Ryan Gosling movies ever, and if it got a sequel, I sure wouldn’t be sad about it.

The Nice Guys

While Drive plays to my dark and tortured side, The Nice Guys was a feel good buddy cop flick that had a nice pace and beautiful chemistry between Gosling and Russell Crowe.

Shane Black would probably need to be on hand to write Nice Guys 2, but the original flick left things fairly open-ended.

Of course, it also made no money.

Even so, the casting, writing, story, and direction came together so perfectly, that there has to be hope that the studios can look past finances just this once.

Gosling was perfect as the affable, ill-prepared, and yet often genius Holland March, and Crowe was the brazen tough guy that offered necessary balance.

A perfect blend of comedy, mystery, and action? Sign me up for another dose of that in Nice Guys 2.

The Gray Man

Gosling really knows how to pull the audience in and make them laugh, but he also proved that he can carry a blockbuster franchise as an action star.

He did that in Netflix’s The Gray Man, where he was “six”, a CIA cast-off who fought for the greater good. It would be hard to replicate the banter he had with Chris Evans, but Gosling pieced together a nice foundation where he’s a likable dude who watches out for someone other than himself, and also looks the part of a badass assassin while doing it.

Seriously, do you remember that airplane fight scene?

That has to be one of the better action sequences I’ve ever seen.

Ultimately, it’s James Bond with a side of The Nice Guys, and I am totally here for it.

Already in the works to be a full-fledged franchise, The Gray Man 2 isn’t a Ryan Gosling sequel we need to hope and pray for. Still, it absolutely has it’s place on this list of the best Ryan Gosling movies that need to be revisited.

Blade Runner 2049

Are you noticing a trend here? This Ryan Gosling guy can act, and he has the chops and looks to hoist an entire franchise on his broad shoulders.

Blade Runner originally made a star out of Harrison Ford, but this is Gosling’s baby now.

In all seriousness, Gosling wasn’t even human, but he brought us on a journey and added new layers to the Blade Runner universe we didn’t even know we needed.

Is there more story to tell here? Definitely. Does Gosling absolutely have to be part of it? That’s debatable. Still, Gosling was what drove the Blade Runner sequel in the first place, so I doubt it’d take much to convince me that him returning would be a good idea.

There are more Ryan Gosling movies that could have made this list, but these are undeniably the four that stand out the most. Love or hate this list, or have a different Ryan Gosling film you think needs to have a sequel? Let me hear it in the comments below!
