The Batman will be hitting movie theaters and HBO Max very soon. If the ticket sales are any indication, it’s going to be amazing. The highly anticipated Batman reboot features Robert Pattison as Bruce Wayne and the caped crusader, and the trailers suggest we’re in for a dark, more revealing dive into Batman’s world.
Of course, anyone who is eager to see a new rendition of Batman on the big screen is right to be a bit hesitant. After all, Christian Bale gave us perhaps the greatest comic book movie trilogy this side of The Avengers, and Ben Affleck gave us a fresh taste not too long ago.
Should DC have even broached a Batman reboot this soon? I think so, especially since everything about The Batman trailers suggests they’ve gotten it right. Specifically, The Batman nailed their casting of Robert Pattison in the leading role.
Whether you’re excited for The Batman or still on the fence on “Battinson”, let’s go over a few reasons why it will probably work, and why Pattinson may be the best Batman yet.
The Batman Gives Us an Unfamiliar Perspective
There’s no better way to rid ourselves of expectation and the ability to compare than to jump into a brand new setting for the dark knight.
That is precisely what The Batman promises to do, with Matt Reeves’ baby launching Batman’s career – and our fly on the wall viewership – in year two of his detective tour through the beleaguered Gotham City.
Does that mean Batman is in for some big mistakes and a wet behind the ears approach to fighting crime? Perhaps, but it’ll also be the most earnest, honest, and genuine Batman we’ve seen yet.
Pattinson isn’t the brute Affleck was, and he won’t be at the top of his class like Bale was. But his raw, authentic drive for justice and vengeance will be something the audience will gladly eat up every step of the way.
Remember in the trailer when the thugs ask him who he’s supposed to be? Pattinson answers back “vengeance” after slapping around one of the baddies.
His urgency and dedication to getting things right is something you can read from Pattison from the jump, and I’m going to go ahead and guess we get that same feeling from him throughout The Batman.
You Think This Batman Won’t Be Any Good
I say “you”, as in anyone who came here with a seed of doubt already planted in their brain. That’s not even that fair to suggest, seeing as anyone searching about Robert Pattinson’s Batman probably stumbled upon this post for two reasons.
- They are looking for optimism that the Robert Pattison Batman will be good OR
- They’re already really excited about Pattinson being in The Batman
While true, there are still some people out there who aren’t sold on “Battinson” just yet, and I get it.
This is the same guy who built his career on the winey vampire trilogy, Twilight. But nobody is forever tied to the early roles in their career, and anyone trying to make it in acting will admit that they’d kill for a career-defining role like Pattinson found in playing Edward Cullen.
The reality is that role hasn’t defined Pattinson, however (he was a boss in those movies, for what it’s worth). Instead, the guy has rebuilt his career with numerous chilling, thrilling, and revealing roles that have put his versatile skill-set on fully display.
Seriously, if Pattinson hasn’t already changed your opinion of him via High Life, Good Times, The King, and Tenet, I don’t even know that I can help you.
But, hopefully, Pattinson crushing skulls and learning on the fly in The Batman can do that. It’s precisely the fact that many won’t buy Pattinson initially that makes me believe he’ll be so damn convincing.
Remember when Heath Ledger was first announced as The Joker? Yeah, everyone saw the dude from 10 Things I Hate About You, and they weren’t sure what to think, either.
Sometimes, the people casting these movies really know what they’re doing. In the case of Robert Pattinson being cast as Batman, Reeves and co. knocked it out of the park.
Pattinson Has the Demeanor to Master Both Roles
Another key attribute to playing a good Batman (nay, a great one) is being able to convincingly play both Batman and Bruce Wayne.
It’s rather arguable that Bale, Affleck, and even Michael Keaton never fully found their fitting with this nuanced character. For some, it’s easy to play the arrogant, billionaire playboy. But then things tighten up when you get in the suit, and actually becoming an iconic superhero isn’t quite as simple.
Or maybe it’s the other way around for others.
Judging by the initial The Batman trailers – as well as roles he’s played in the past – Pattinson is equipped with the wiry physicality of a young vigilante, as well as the ability to come off as both unassuming and wholly arrogant.
Pattinson can be all of this in one character; equal parts savage, friend, and elitist. That’s my take, at least.
Is Robert Pattinson the Best Batman Yet?
Only time will tell if Robert Pattinson will be the best Batman of all time. It’s admittedly too early to say for sure, but I do think the story Matt Reeves has gone with – and the footage in trailers to this point – do suggest we’re in for a legit revival.
Luckily, it’s not a forced Batman reboot, and it’s not regurgitated content.
That’s a key reason why Robert Pattinson has a chance to do something special here. People already don’t think he’s capable (he is), but he’s coming in with a Batman story not everyone is fully familiar with.
The Batman in general is also incredibly well cast, and shot in a gritty, unapproachable manner. The fact that Pattinson slides so effortlessly into this warped setting is one final parting reason why I believe he’s going to crush this role.
