- Gal Gadot is likely out as Wonder Woman just yet, while her tenure can only last so long.
- Yara Shahidi is one interesting candidate to replace the 37-year old actress in the DCU.
- If Hollywood wants an authentic Greek woman, Tonia Sotiropoulou fits the mold.
I think Gal Gadot has been solid in her role as Wonder Woman. There are others who disagree. Regardless of where you stand on the Gal Gadot Wonder Woman debate, though, it’s fair to assume she won’t play the DC character forever.
Gadot is now 39 years old, and the new DC decision-makers are looking to hit the reset button on the DC Universe.
They’ve already cancelled Wonder Woman 3, after all.
Henry Cavill is out as Superman, and Gal Gadot’s exit is sure to follow. So, who will play Wonder Woman next? There are a lot of talented actresses to consider, but these are some big shoes to fill.
I’m sure you have your own ideas, but six potential Wonder Woman actresses stand out above the rest.
Is Gal Gadot Still Wonder Woman?
Probably not. She’s pushing 40, and while she’s had her moments as the iconic DC superhero, her time has probably come to an end.
You can gain a little more insight by checking out this video breakdown:
The moral of the story is that Gadot, much like other big names like Cavill, simply has timed out. DC has moved forward with new leads for several major characters, and it doesn’t look like that will stop with Wonder Woman.
When Does the Next Wonder Woman Movie Come Out?
Nobody knows. Well, perhaps James Gunn does. Of course, the new Superman movie was announced a while ago and we already know the cast, and that won’t be dropping for some time yet.
It’s premier date is listed as July 11th of next year, and DC will be focusing on the release of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and The Batman II as well.
Naturally, the casting of the next Wonder Woman – let alone the actual production and release of a new Wonder Woman movie – are on ice for the moment.
Actresses Who Could Be the Next Wonder Woman
Gal Gadot is almost certainly done with this role, so it’s time to start dreaming up what next Wonder Woman actress makes the most sense.
Feel free to add to the madness in the comments, as I am only one person and only have so many ideas. I think I have a few good ones, though, so let’s go over six women I think could be the next Wonder Woman and play the role effectively (if not better than Gadot):
1. Yara Shahidi
I’ll start off my list of potential Wonder Woman candidates with Shahidi, who sure has come a long way from the snarky kid in Black-ish.
Shahidi brings youth and upside to this role, while her real life experience as an activist gives her the foundation to play a character with such moral fortitude.
2. Ana De Armas
If there’s one thing we know about Ana De Armas, it’s that she’s not afraid of a little controversy. She took on the role of a lifetime with Blonde, and has quite the stellar resume.
Beyond having the look and acting ability to be the next Wonder Woman, she also has the action movie experience one would hope for.
She most recently appeared in The Gray Man, but was also featured in Blade Runner 2-49 and James Bond.
De Armas is a huge name that few fans would balk at. The only major issues? She’s the oldest possible Gal Gadot replacement on this list, and there’s little doubt she’s awfully busy these days.
3. Adria Arjona
If Hollywood prefers someone with elite acting ability and some experience the superhero realm already, then consider Adria Arjona one of the top options to replace Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.
Arjona is very much in her acting prime at just 30 years old, but she’s dabbled with this type of content thanks to her time in Morbius.
You can see her in action as she breaks down her Triple Frontier workout, too.
So, we know she can run.
She’s also a rising star in general, having broken out as Bix Caleen in the Disney+ hit, Andor. Arjona has the perfect resume fans and studio decision-makers will be eyeing for this shift.
4. Jessica Henwick
We first got introduced to Jessica Henwick in Marvel’s Iron Fist, which right away should serve as a reminder that she can kick some serious ass.
Playing Wonder Woman would be a giant step up, but the recipe for her pulling this off is there.
Henwick has since displayed her acting ability in The Force Awakens and Game of Thrones, suggesting she’s no stranger to major projects. Could she be the next Wonder Woman? Her resume certainly suggests she’s a viable option.
5. Ella Balinska
If you’re looking for potential Gal Gadot replacements, any new Wonder Woman list has to include Ella Balinska. In fact, in my research for piling up actresses that could take over this role, I was shocked to see few sites even mention her.
Balinska has the features you’d look for when casting the next Wonder Woman, and at just 26, she’s one of the youngest candidates on this list.
That could make her a perfect fit, considering the announcement of plans of a Wonder Woman prequel.
She’s had experience in big productions, having shown her abilities in Charlie’s Angels and Resident Evil already.
If DC wants to truly start fresh and have a new Wonder Woman for the next decade, they may be looking at the best option out there.
6. Tonia Sotiropoulou
Lastly, we do need to consider Hollywood getting pretty literal here and casting a Greek actress to play Wonder Woman next.
That doesn’t mean it has to be Tonia Sotiropoulou, but she does fit the bill. I’m not the first to suggest it, either. Fans are very much into this possibility, and I can understand why.
She’s admittedly just two years younger than Gadot, but she’s a seasoned pro who undeniably has the look of Wonder Woman.
You can freely nominate other Greek actresses that could play Wonder Woman, but she’s probably the first that comes to mind.
Predicting Who Will Replace Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman
It’s tough to predict who will play Wonder Woman next. Gal Gadot wasn’t really on anyone’s radar initially, and she turned out to be a brilliant casting.
Gadot may not even be done with the role just yet, too.
That said, she is pushing 40 at this point, so it makes sense for James Gunn and co. to think about moving on in the near future.
If the studio wants a great pick they can roll with for the next decade, I think Ella Balinska is the right call.
She’s got the look of Wonder Woman, she has enough acting experience, she’s been in high profile productions, she’s mostly an unknown compared to the other candidates, and she’s still very young.
The new Wonder Woman could be anyone, and I’m open to more suggestions.
