I don’t know what it is about iconic ABC hit Lost that I just can’t quit. Maybe it’s just simply because there aren’t a lot of TV shows like Lost in existence.
Regardless, the series has been away from our screens and out of our lives for over a decade, yet here I am still thinking about it.
The sixth and final season of Lost wrapped the show up as neatly and definitively as possible, too.
Even so, I am left wanting and hoping for Lost season 7.
There is a huge difference between wanting and realistically expecting a seventh season of Lost, though.
A lot of time has passed since the show ended, and nothing to this point has suggested a continuation of the series is even remotely logical.
Still, it doesn’t hurt to check back in on the potential of a Lost season 7.
Recapping the Lost Finale
First, let’s do a quick autopsy of the death of this series. Lost first ended after six seasons back in 2010, and while some of the main characters were still alive when the curtain fell, some pretty big ones were written out of the story for good.
The Lost ending was admittedly met with some raised eyebrows and a little disappointment by the masses, while others loved it’s emotional depth.
No matter how you look at it, the Lost finale was somewhat ambiguous and perhaps even open-ended, while some viewers just thought it was lazy or bad.
Still unsure about what you saw when Last ended? Here’s a revealing recap:
Creators Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have been outspoken about this being the true end of the series, and that returning to the mothership, so to speak, would destroy what they built.
There is some truth to that, but we all thought Dexter was done for good, and the original showrunner returned to (in his eyes) correct the wrongs of that show’s finale.
It’s still probably more likely that we one day get some Lost spin offs instead of a full Lost season 7, but the way the sixth season ended at least keeps the debate raging on.
Who Would Return for Lost Season 7?
One issue that actually could be taken care of with a little bit of creative writing? Some of the original characters died at the end of the series.
At the risk of messing with how the series ended initially, however, those deaths could be reverted or explained away.
Stick with me here; Lost was pretty crazy, right?
If a crazy show came back, it’d probably have to have a pretty wild premise to begin with. If the showrunners who so far have had no interest in a seventh season were suddenly all in, you’d have to ask yourself why.
My guess? Most of the original cast would be on board and the writers would have dreamt up one amazing story worth telling.
In the name of transparency, though, let’s quickly recap the deceased characters from the main cast:
- Juliet Burke
- Charlie Pace
- Jacob
- Sayid Jarrah
- Sun & Kin Kwon
- The Man in Black
- Jack Shephard
On paper, the above names would no longer be in any Lost season 7 conversations. I wouldn’t be quite as excited for a Lost reboot, but it wouldn’t kill the dream completely.
Regardless of which characters would appear in a Lost revival, we would still have to hammer down exactly the reasoning for a return. And it’d have to be pretty damn good.
What Would Lost Season 7 Be About?
The possibilities are endless when considering what a Lost reboot would be about.
You do have to come to terms with what a seventh season of Lost would attempt to be or say, though. Is a return of Lost continuing the story, is it a spin off of sorts, or is it a variant of the original story?
Lost dealt with wild, complicated stories. It had numerous complex backstories, mythology, and sci-fi elements.
Put simply; you never knew what you were going to get and you were often surprised at every turn.
I don’t have a real concrete answer for such a hypothetical, but there was one user who mapped out what a seventh season would look like.
There are more Lost reboot ideas that are interesting. Some could be regarded as brilliant, even. And a good amount – mine, yours, and everyone’s put together – probably suck.
That leads me to believe there is no “in the middle” when projecting a Lost revival. A seventh season of Lost would either be amazing or the worst thing we’ve ever seen.
If Lost returns, however, the story would have to be worth the risk of ruining the original series.
Will Lost Season 7 Actually Happen?
I tend to doubt it. Like, a lot.
The showrunners have been rather adamant about not touching Lost’s ending. If you really look at the series and what it set out to accomplish, it actually ended perfectly.
That said, I do believe there could be more story to tell here.
The series dealt with time travel, sci-fi themes, and an epic battle between good and evil. If you incorporate time travel elements and a big twist, there’s a case to be made that Lost season 7 is possible.
In fact, you could argue it’s even necessary.
The cast is a lot older now and it remains to be seen what any potential Lost season 7 story would actually be. However, fan interest remains high, and ABC (or other networks) will always be looking for that next project that can carry them in regards to ratings.
Don’t think we can’t go back and jumpstart dead franchises, either.
The Gilmore Girls, Twin Peaks, and so many other iconic series have been returned to in recent years. I’ll admit returning to Lost could be dicey, but the upside warrants the consideration.
I’d just hope the story is next level awesome – and makes sense – so a seventh season of Lost doesn’t take away from what we got out of the first six seasons.
