The Legend of Zelda is perhaps the most beloved video game franchise ever made. There might be better games or characters, but for some reason, this game and story has stood the test of time.
If you’re here, you’re beyond familiar with The Legend of Zelda and you’re probably desperately waiting for this amazing world to have real life breathed into it.
No clue who Zelda is? Well, it’s the title character of an amazing Japanese video game first created for Nintendo back in 1986. It’s seen numerous glorious adaptations since then, but it wasn’t until a serious tease job on Twitter that people got seriously into the idea of seeing this character in human form.
There are two major characters to think about when talking about The Legend of Zelda movie casting; Zelda herself and the hero, Link.
Most of the attention would surely be on what actor will play Link, so I thought I’d instead look at possible Zelda actresses. Here are the five that stand out the most:
1. Emma Watson
Not solely due to the fan art fake-out, Emma Watson as Zelda actually makes a lot of sense. Not only does she have the features you’d look for to play this elf-ish princess, but she has loads of experience in the fantasy realm.
Most know Watson for her many days as Hermione Granger in the Harry Pottery series, after all.
From one incredible fantasy-themed franchise to the next, am I right?
It would make sense, while the 32-year old also recently smashed the role of Belle, and is still young enough to be one of the main faces of a franchise startup.
Watson has proven she can capture that regal look, while she also has the smarts, charm, and general acting chops to thrive in this magical world. The only problem? It’s arguable she might be getting a bit too old for this role, and she also seems almost too obvious at this point.
2. Millie Bobby Brown
If Hollywood wants to start from scratch – and when making a massive franchise, who wouldn’t? – there may be no better option than Netflix’s Stranger Things star.
Millie Bobby Brown just turned 19, so she is definitely young enough to carry this role for the next decade if need be, while she now has loads of experience under her belt.
Obviously she’s best known for her work as Eleven in Stranger Things, but she’s also displayed a more classical touch as Enola Holmes.
If you’re looking for someone who can class up the joint but also has a way with special powers, I’m not sure there’s a better actress to play Zelda.
Of course, this might be another potential Zelda actress that is a tad too obvious. Due to that, I’ve got a few more fantastic options.
3. Lily James
Want to turn it back a bit and throw age out the window? I don’t see any harm with starting a franchise with the main characters in their 30s, especially if they can feasibly look younger than they actually are.
Lily James fits the profile, and she also has tons of relevant experience to smash in a project like this. Most recently, she’s taken on the daunting task of becoming Pamela Anderson in Pam & Tommy.
That role didn’t move mountains, but it did display Lily James’ ability to play just about any character – specifically a real person most of us already know pretty well.
James also has dabbled in the fantasy realm and has executed flawlessly as a member of the upper class in projects such as Downton Abbey, Cinderella, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
4. Elle Fanning
I tend to think anyone casting The Legend of Zelda will aim for the younger side of things, so let’s trim some years off with a viable candidate in Elle Fanning.
The 24-year old is a rising Hollywood star after smashing in Super 8 and Maleficent. Her natural sweetness and innocent look gives her a real shot at this gig, while she has the experience and raw talent to take this thing to the next level.
5. Jenna Ortega
One more amazing option if you’re wondering who will play Zelda in a potential movie? How about Jenna Ortega. She’s the flavor of the month at the moment, as she understandable has turned heads for her work in Netflix’s Wednesday.
Hollywood may just want to make sure the schedule isn’t too jammed.
That said, the show has been a big hit, and she’s drawn rave reviews for her rendition of the title character.
It’s impossible not to like the bubbly Ortega, who certainly gives the studio decision-makers a young Zelda to mold over the next decade.
Who Will Play Zelda in a The Legend of Zelda Movie?
The jury is still out on two things; whether we’ll even get a Zelda movie, and who would play the role of the famous princess. It’s also worth wondering if it’d just end up being a TV series, and then you’d have to start thinking about who could play Link and the rest of the cast.
Emma Watson and Lily James stand out as great options, but my guess is any studio putting a movie together for this would want to start young and mature with the characters, whether it’s several seasons in a series or a decade with a trilogy.
Whatever the case, Brown has proven she can both carry a series or a feature film, and she’s still only 19 years old. Of course, there are so many viable options when thinking about which actress could play Zelda.
Zendaya is another amazing option, and I could honestly go on and on about several deserving actresses. Got a perfect fit from this list or one of your own? Let me hear it in the comments!
