Few TV series are as captivating as Netflix smash hit, Black Mirror. Being an anthology series that takes viewers on an entirely different joyride each time out will do that, it seems.
Getting different from episode to episode clearly isn’t that difficult, but finding a way to keep the same viewers glued to the screen – while putting out an elite product consistently – is the real triumph.
So, where can you get more of that?
Sorry, it’s not quite that simple. For one, Black Mirror is kind of it’s own thing. There are other anthology series, but nothing quite this submersive or intense.
But we can try, right? With Black Mirror’s main intent, acting, and storytelling all in mind, here are a few TV shows like Black Mirror you may want to check out next.
Westworld
Much like Black Mirror, Westworld is an enthralling sci-fi series that gets your adrenaline pumping while engaging you with intense and dramatic storylines.
Nothing is quite what it seems with this HBO mega hit, as it drops you into the wild west, only to throw your entire world on its side.
Westworld has an amazing cast and brilliant story, but stripped down to its core it is a deep dive into the ethics of artificial intelligence, and the impact it could have on our lives.
That narrative is obviously taken to the extreme, but once you go down the rabbit hole, it’s difficult to climb back out.
A tense sci-fi journey caked with hard-hitting philosophical questions is just what the doctor ordered if you’re looking for good TV shows like Black Mirror.
Electric Dreams
Much like Black Mirror, Electric Dreams is an anthology series. You’re not getting the same story every single time, and you’re still dabbling in the realm of technology and society here.
Based on the science fiction novels by Philip K. Dick, this series offers a brand new installment each time out, diving into complex tales about the future and technology’s impact on humanity.
The running themes and approach of the show are a lot like Black Mirror. You don’t want an exact replica, but if you want a show done similarly, this could be for you.
Dark
If you’re looking for a TV series like Black Mirror, I doubt you only want strictly anthology shows. That’s why I’m pointing you to Netflix smash hit Dark, which is impossibly still overlooked.
Netflix has some huge hits, and Dark seems to be passed over for the likes of Stranger Things, Better Call Saul, and some Netflix originals. But I am telling you now, if you want to see more shows similar to Black Mirror, Dark is right up your alley.
The German sci-fi thriller offers a really complicated and intense time travel tale. It’s certainly a bit tough to watch initially, but it’s worth digging your heels in for.
A lot of the characters are connected and you get to experience a ripple effect of everyone’s actions across different timelines.
Time travel is always a compelling concept, but Dark takes it to a whole new level, unlike anything you’ve ever seen. If you enjoy the awe-inspiring themes Black Mirror delivers, you’ll love this show.
The Twilight Zone
I could also add The Outler Limits and other anthology series here – and you can check that show out, too – but I’ll cap my list of shows like Black Mirror with the anthology OG.
That’d be The Twilight Zone, which first debuted back in 1959, and resurfaced as a reboot again in 2019.
The original series is much better, and I’ll point you to some of the best episodes to get you started.
Of course, it also was a different era. Regardless, the show explored the impossible, the scary, and the downright unexplainable across a litany of different episodes.
It’s all made up fiction, but the episodes still drop you into an imaginary reality that is actually super scary if you allow yourself to believe it could be real.
And to be fair, that’s no different than what Black Mirror does. If you love the Netflix hit, then The Twilight Zone should also be on your list of shows to check out next, as well.
Finding Good Shows Like Black Mirror
Well, there you have it, my personal list of the best TV series like Black Mirror that I think you should watch.
None of these shows are exactly like Black Mirror, but for a variety of reasons, they’re in the same neighborhood. And even if you disagree, I think you’ll like them if you like Black Mirror.
While we’re on the topic, I’ll keep things on theme and point you to the best Black Mirror episodes. It’s my personal list, but I’ve seen every episode and this is where I ranked them.
