3 Will Byers Stranger Things Theories We Don’t Want to Believe

Stranger Things ghostbusters

The story of Will Byers has been a slow burn. He was at the center of the first two seasons of Stranger Things, as he helped introduce the Upside Down. Then the monster from the other realm took over his body.

It seems the darkness left Will alone for the next couple of seasons, and some Stranger Things fans hoped he’d be safe for good.

However, it really feels like Will is trending in the wrong direction. The character in a sense came out as homosexual, and felt more detached from his group than ever. Could that be foreshadowing that he may grow further apart from his best pals?

Well, we know he’s at least going to be a huge part of season five.

There are some wild Will Byers Stranger Things theories out there that paint him into a corner. Some are pretty interesting, and others are downright horrifying.

Wondering what could go down in the final season? Let’s look at the top three Will theories for Stranger Things season five.

Will is Behind the Upside Down Being Frozen in Time

Why don’t we want this Will theory for Stranger Things season five to be true? Because it means the connection between him and The Mind Flayer is alive and well.

The reasoning that backs this Will Stranger Things theory is simple; Byers doesn’t want to move on in life, and the Upside Down is stuck, just the same.

Maybe once Will decides to move on – or figures out how to – the gang discovers all the secrets they need to defeat Vecna. The Duffer Brothers have suggested the time freeze has a lot to do with season five, so this is one of the easier Will Stranger Things theories to get behind.

The only question, of course, is precisely how things will unfold.

One add-on Will theory is that he’ll be the one to take down Vecna.

If Will Byers is the key to this entire story, then it’d only make sense that he’d end up sacrificing himself, or at least finding a way to save his friends.

Will is Controlling a Real Life Dungeons & Dragons Game

Is this Will Stranger Things theory directly tied to the time freeze? Probably, but I do think either theory could survive without the other.

There are a lot of interesting Will Byers Stranger Things theories out there, but this one ranks high as far as “the hell?” goes.

But as you may recall, that’s kind of how it all started.

For this one, we’d find out that Will has orchestrated a real life D&D game this entire time, whether he knows it and did it intentionally or not.

I’m not entirely sure how you explain him accidentally being abducted and taken into the Upside Down before things truly started falling apart for him, but that’s for the showrunners to figure out.

Will is the Next Big Bad in Stranger Things

Okay, we’re finally here; touching on the one Will Stranger Things theory I’m afraid of the most. Don’t get me wrong, if Will Byers ends up being the bad guy, it will make for quite an awesome fifth season.

And the potential this sets up for a climactic ending with Will going up against all of his former pals? I mean, it doesn’t get much better than that from an entertainment perspective.

The Vecna reveal was tantalizing enough. Advancing to Will being the true bad guy at the end of it all would really take Stranger Things over the top.

Obviously the most natural path there is for Will to still be very much connected to Vecna. Once that narrative is established again, perhaps Will gets some powers or is controlled by Vecna to do some things he doesn’t want to do.

Heck, even worse? What if he’s so bitter by his unraveling situation that he actually wants to destroy the world as he knows it?

I shudder at the thought.

But hey, one way or another, there is absolutely a story to be told where Will Byers is the bad guy in Stranger Things season five.
